DoBrass developed a leakproof design thanks to the small hole in the lid that allows air in and out of the bottle. This hole also serves a purpose to prevent dust from entering your water when you’re hiking. 4 Frostbite Symptoms And How To Treat Them

With the onset of winter comes the risk of getting frostbite. With all of the outdoor recreation that's available to us in the winter, it is important to learn how to protect ourselves. Knowing the signs of frostbite in the early stages can help you to avoid permanent damage to your skin and underlying tissues. If you live in, or are traveling to, a cold winter climate, it is crucial to know what frostbite is and the frostbite symptoms that you may experience. We have put together the following information to help you learn what to look for and ways to treat it.

What Is Frostbite?

woman wearing jacket and gloves

Photo by Victor Duarte from Pexels

Frostbite occurs when the skin and the tissue underneath become frozen. Early frostbite symptoms can be seen when your skin turns red and becomes really cold. Then, it will turn numb and be hard and pale. Fingers, toes, nose, ears, cheeks and chin are the usual areas where frostbite occurs. Exposed skin is most likely to become frostbitten, but it can happen to skin that is covered by gloves or clothing as well.

The Three Stages

Frostbite happens in three stages:

Frostnip

This is the earliest stage of frostbite, seen when your skin becomes red and cold. When the affected area becomes warm again, you might have tingling and pain in that area. Frostnip does not cause permanent damage.

Superficial Frostbite

If the cold, red skin of frostnip continues to be exposed, new frostbite symptoms will appear. The skin will turn white or pale and begin to feel warm. This warming sensation is a serious sign of skin damage. Treating frostbite by rewarming the affected area may cause stinging, burning and swelling. Your skin may look mottled or marked with pale spots and darker spots of skin. During the next 36 hours, a fluid-filled blister will likely appear.

Deep Frostbite

This is the most severe stage of frostbite. It affects both the surface layer of skin and the tissues underneath. Your skin will become white or bluish gray. The affected area will lose all feeling, including loss of pain or discomfort and the feeling of being cold. Finger and toe joints may not work due to the numbness. After rewarming the area, large blisters will form within 24 to 48 hours. When the blisters heal, the area underneath will be black and hard, and the tissue will die.

Causes of Frostbite

Frostbite is usually caused by the skin being exposed to cold-weather. Cold temperatures on a windy day can shorten the length of time it takes to get frostbite. It can also be caused by the skin coming into direct contact with ice, frozen metal or very cold liquids.

Improper Clothing

Wearing clothing that isn't warm enough or doesn't cover the skin sufficiently on a cold day may lead to frostbite. Clothing that is too tight may also contribute to frostbite as there is no air pocket between your skin and the layer of clothing for body heat to gather.

Extended Exposure

Staying outside too long when it is cold and windy will lead to frostbite. The chances of getting frostbite increase when air temperature falls below 5 degrees Farenheit even on a calm day. When the wind chill registers at -16 degrees Farenheit, frostbite can occur in less than 30 minutes.

Direct Contact

Touching metal that has been exposed to cold weather can freeze the skin. Plus, if your skin has any moisture on it, the metal will freeze to your skin. The same thing can happen with ice and cold packs.

Risk Factors

There are risk factors that increase a person's susceptibility to frostbite. These risk factors include:

  • Some medical conditions if they affect your ability to feel cold, such as fatigue, diabetes and poor circulation.
  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Fear, panic or a mental illness that impairs your ability to respond to cold appropriately
  • Having had frostnip or frostbite in the past
  • Being very young or elderly (These age groups do not produce and retain body heat as easily.)
  • High altitudes
  • Smoking

4 Frostbite Symptoms and How to Treat Them

Symptoms

NUMBNESS, TINGLING AND REDDENED SKIN

In the earliest stages, frostbite symptoms include reddened skin that has a pins-and-needles tingling with numbness. Paying attention to these early warning signs can prevent permanent damage to your skin. Your skin will still offer resistance when pressed upon. Applying aloe vera gel or lotion to the affected area may help to soothe the skin when it is damaged by superficial frostbite.

WHITE OR BLUISH-GRAY SKIN

As it worsens, frostbite symptoms indicate that serious damage is being done to your skin. It will begin to feel warm again but will appear pale white or bluish-gray. There is no longer any resistance when the skin is pressed upon.

JOINT AND MUSCLE STIFFNESS

When frostbite moves to the underlying tissues, joint and muscle stiffness will develop. It will become difficult to hold anything. When your feet are affected, it is difficult to walk.

FLUID AND BLOOD-FILLED BLISTERS

When frostbite moves to the underlying tissues, joint and muscle stiffness will develop. It will become difficult to hold anything. When your feet are affected, it is difficult to walk.

Treatment

Minor frostbite symptoms are able to be treated at home, using general first- aid materials. When the frostbite symptoms are more severe, medical attention is required. The first step in treating all cases of frostbite is rewarming the affected area. Rewarm the affected area in a warm water bath for 15 to 30 minutes. Do not rub the skin or apply direct heat; this will cause more damage. Also, do not walk on frostbitten feet.  After it is rewarmed, severe frostbite requires more treatment. These treatments may include:

ORAL PAIN MEDICINE

The rewarming process can be rather painful. Pain medication can be taken to help ease the pain and discomfort of rewarming. Be sure to take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. For superficial frostbite, over-the-counter pain medicine is usually sufficient.

BANDAGING

After your skin is thawed, your doctor will wrap the affected area with sterile dressings to protect the skin. Your doctor may also gently separate your finger or toes while they rewarm to prevent further damage. Elevating the injury may help to reduce swelling.

DEBRIDEMENT

Debridement is the removal of damaged tissue. They must remove damaged and dead tissue in order for the area to heal properly. It may take up to 3 months before it is clear which tissue is damaged and which is healthy.

HYDROTHERAPY

Soaking in a whirlpool will help keep the skin clean by naturally removing dead tissue. This may help to speed healing. You will be encouraged to move the affected area gently while in the whirlpool.

ANTIBIOTICS

Antibiotics will be prescribed if it appears the area is infected. Follow your doctor's orders on how to take your medication to get the maximum benefit.

CLOT-BUSTING DRUGS

If your frostbite symptoms are severe enough, you may receive medication to restore blood flow through an IV. This reduces the risk of amputation of the affected area.

WOUND CARE

They apply a variety of wound care techniques to the treatment of frostbite depending on the severity of the symptoms and the extent of damage.

Complications of Frostbite

  • Increased cold sensitivity
  • Long-term numbness
  • Changes in skin color
  • Changes in, or complete loss of, nails
  • Frostbite arthritis
  • Increased risk of future frostbite

See your doctor immediately if you develop any signs of the following complications:

  • Infection
  • Tetanus
  • Gangrene

How to Prevent Frostbite

The damage of frostbite can be prevented. The easiest way to prevent frostbite is to stay indoors when the temperatures outside plummet. If you do need to go out, here are some tips to help you avoid frostbite:

  • Not staying outside too long in bad weather.
  • Dressing in layers of loose, warm clothing. (The air that is trapped between layers acts like insulation.)
  • Wearing windproof and waterproof outer garments
  • Wearing a hat or headband that completely covers your ears
  • Wearing mittens instead of gloves (They protect better.)
  • Wearing socks that fit well and wick moisture away from the skin
  • Watching for the early signs of frostbite
  • Carrying emergency clothing and blankets in your vehicle in case you get stranded
  • Not drinking alcohol
  • Moving (Exercise keeps the blood flowing and helps you stay warm.)

Fire Escape Plan for Your Family: Our Complete Guide

No one ever thinks a tragedy will happen to them. We see events on the news all the time such as accidents, home invasions, and house fires. We rarely plan for these things because we never think that we will be in such a situation. If you do one thing this coming year, whether you have a family or live alone, create a fire escape plan. Even if you live alone, it's a good idea to have a fire escape plan for yourself and in case you have company staying over.

A fire escape plan does not need to be elaborate. There needs to be just enough detail to ensure everyone is safe, knows how to get out, and where to meet once they are out. A good fire escape plan will take into consideration the basics, different ages of family members, and the different needs of those who are disabled, have cognitive issues or are elderly.

A fire escape plane is an action plan on what to do if your home is on fire. A basic plan will show exit routes, how to leave safely, who's in charge of safely getting things like wallets and keys, and who the safety captain and co-captains are.  Everyone's fire escape plan is different based on what type of home you live in, if you have pets, and who lives with you if anyone. Your plan needs to account for pets if you have them. Keep in mind, pets like smaller children might panic and hide. Get out and alert firefighters to the last place your pet was, hiding places, name, and size.

Specialized Fire Escape Plan

Your fire escape plan might include special instructions for getting those who are younger, have a disability, or older to safety. The key here is to keep age and ability in mind when creating your fire escape plan. The focus of this group is to get out safely and should not be given any other tasks to take care of. A specialized fire escape plan should include who will need help and who the helper will be.

Benefits of a Fire Escape Plan

The main benefit of having a fire escape plan is to make sure you and your family get out safely. There is also a benefit in planning what to do before a fire, during a fire, and after a fire. These are things that can be forgotten in the aftermath of a fire so pre and post planning can be beneficial.

Before a Fire

Before there's a fire, there is planning for things to put in place before, what to do during, and how to deal with the aftermath. Before a fire put together personal information to keep at relatives, neighbors, or in a safe deposit box at the bank. This should include medical records, birth certificates, copies of insurance policies, social security cards, drivers licenses, and medical insurance. If you have pets, include vaccination records for them as well. This will save time in worrying about replacing that information if it's lost in the fire.

During a Fire

The benefit of having a fire escape plan during a fire could be the difference between life and death. The information in your fire escape plan gives everyone the best opportunity of surviving and getting out safely. Having a fire escape plan in place can also inform your family about what to do if evacuation is not possible or not safe.

After a Fire

Having a fire escape plane can be beneficial after a fire so everyone knows where to go and what to do next. This includes where to meet during, knowing where all of you will go immediately after, and a plan to house pets if need be. This ensures everyone, both human and animals, has a place to go before it becomes a necessity.

How to Create a Fire Escape Plan for Your Family

So how do you create a fire escape plan? Start with the basics and plan your route. Make sure that every room has two ways to exit that are appropriate for your type of house. Look at the list below for ideas that cover different house types, who's in charge and how to exit safely.

Basic Plan

  • Plan to exit either by a window or a door
  • If you have a two-story home, invest in retractable fire ladders that have an adequate weight limit
  • Have younger children help make a color-coded map that shows escape routes, meeting places, and how to dial 9-1-1
  • Make a written list explaining how to escape using different exits
  • Put copies of your plan on the back of all door including the bathroom, basement, and garage doors
  • Decide what adults are in charge and what their duties are
  • If you live an apartment building or complex, pull all fire alarms and bang on doors as you leave, do not stop
  • Practice your fire escape plan at two to three times a month

How to Exit

  • If the door is hot, leave it closed
  • Put a towel under the door to keep smoke out
  • Open the window and alert people you are there and wait for help
  • Move to a window on an exterior wall
  • If you are able, get a wet rag to put over your nose and mouth and stay on the floor
  • If the door is not hot, carefully open the door and crawl to the nearest exit, stay below the smoke
  • Once you are out, stay out, do not go back in for any reason

Who's in Charge?

If there is more than one adult in the home one should be in charge and the other should be the backup or co-captain. These are the people who will know where all the important information is, take a head count at the meeting place, call the proper authorities, and contact other family members for either help or updates. If there are two adults, they should discuss who will be in charge of any infants and young children, those with special needs, and the elderly.

Infants and Young Children

The main concern in a fire is those who cannot help themselves such as infants and young children. If there are more than one child and more than one adult, put in the action plan who will go to which child. This will avoid blindly running from room to room at the same time. When you have your assigned child proceed to the exit. Younger children may not hear an alarm or become frightened and hide. Check under the bed and the closet of your assigned child while calling their name.

Special Needs

Those with special needs might be more difficult to calm in a stressful situation. So it is important to practice the fire escape plan regularly. Again, assign an adult to the person with special needs who understands what those needs are. If they are in a wheelchair, make sure the assigned person can either lift them or safely drag them to safety. The assigned person will also need to know what calming techniques work if the special need is one where the person has a cognitive issue such as Down's syndrome, Autism, or diminished mental capacity.

Elderly

With the elderly, there can be mobility issues and problems with confusion. This is another group that should have an adult assigned to them. Make sure the adult assigned can assist with mobility issues and knows how to keep the person calm but moving. This is especially important for those with dementia. Stay calm, be as soothing as possible, answer their questions, but stress the importance of leaving without panicking them. If it is an issue of moving slower due to age, get them started towards the exit and then move on to your assigned people and then work back to them as long as it is still safe to do so.

Pets

Pets fall into the same categories as elderly, infants and young children, and those who have special needs. Assign the pets out evenly amongst the adults. Remember, pets are like young children. They might panic and bolt, or panic and hide. Look under furniture and in corners as you make your way out. Once you are out, let the authorities know there are pets inside, what their names are, favorite places to hide, and overall temperament when stressed.

Conclusion

We don't like to plan for bad things or tragedies but the more prepared we are the better the odds are that we will survive. Creating a fire escape plan does not have to be difficult. Keep it simple especially for younger children, the elderly, and those with special needs. Have kids help create the plan and make colorful maps to put on the back of doors.

When choosing who is in charge of which child, a person with special needs, an elderly person, or a pet keep in mind who has the strength to bodily move who. The goal of the fire escape plan is to get everyone out safely. Remember, to do that follow your plan. Touch the doors, stay low and below the smoke, know your exit routes and the exterior windows. Practice often enough that everyone knows where to meet and who's in charge. Careful planning on your part and knowing your fire escape plan will help you and your family survive.

10 Tips for Living Through Power Outages

Most of us don't think of power outages until we're searching for flashlights or candles in the dark. Some think the light on their cellphone will be good enough to make it through power outages. That might work if power outages happen only when your phone is already fully charged. But, what about being prepared for power outages that happen suddenly, when you are least prepared?

10 TIPS FOR LIVING THROUGH POWER OUTAGES
CONCLUSION

Now that winter is here and it is darker outside longer, the effects of power outages can be longer and differ from power outages during warmer months. A power outage need not be a disaster, regardless of the time of the year, if we learn about the different types of power outages and how to prepare beforehand. Let's look at two types of power outages, how to prepare for power outages and some tips for making it through one.

Implications of a Power Outage

As you know, the first implication of a power outage is no power. You might first notice a flicker of lights, especially during a storm, or the lights and all electronics might suddenly shut off. At that point, you need to verify what type of power outage is happening. Power outages can either affect your individual home, your entire neighborhood or your city. You should know how to tell which one is occurring and have a plan for either type.

Widespread Power Outages

When the lights go out, besides running around flipping switches, look outside. Are your neighbors' homes dark? If it's dark out, are the street lights on? If you answered yes to the first question and no to the second, chances are the power outage is affecting more than just your home. There isn't much you can do at this point, and the issue has most likely been reported.

Just Your Home

Ask the same questions here, but if your neighbors have lights and the street lights are on, then most likely the power outage pertains to just your home. You would want to call the utility company and let them know. They will have to have someone come out and find the cause of the power outage. They will tell you if the issue is something that is their responsibility to fix or if you need to call a certified electrician. In either scenario, you need to be prepared to be without power.

  • Smoking

HOW TO BE PREPARED

Being prepared for power outages means more than making sure there are candles and flashlights in your home. You need to have a short-term plan of what to do right after the power outage and a long-term plan to keep everyone, including pets, healthy and safe for its duration. Let's consider power outages that just apply to your home as a short-term outage and widespread power outages as a long-term outage. While both types of power outages will have some of the same points in being prepared, there will be differences in the number of supplies and types of supplies.

Just Your Home

If the power outage is only in your home, the information below should help you make sure everyone is okay until power is restored.

  • Having flashlights, batteries, candles, matches and a lighter in the same location
  • Making sure there are phone chargers in your car
  • Having at least one gallon of clean water for every person in your home and at least one gallon for every two pets
  • Keeping the doors to your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible
  • Having another heat source and a battery-operated generator for indoor use or a fuel-operated generator located outside the home
  • Calling your local electric company and alerting them to the problem
  • Having a carbon monoxide tester on hand in case you have to resort to a gas/fuel power option

Alerting your local electric company allows them to come out and either locate the problem specific to only your home or find an issue that is causing a more widespread issue.

Widespread Power Outages

A widespread power outage might last longer than one that is just affecting your home. A widespread outage might take longer to locate or require the removal, or replacement, of equipment. Some things that can cause a widespread power outage include a car hitting a telephone pole, a natural disaster or a cut power line somewhere in the neighborhood. Dealing with a widespread power outage might require more supplies and ones that will be needed for a longer period.

10 TIPS FOR LIVING THROUGH POWER OUTAGES

Living through a power outage is manageable as long you've prepared in advance and use your resources wisely. Below are tips for getting through power outages without too much difficulty whether the power outage is just at your home or widespread.

  • Prepare a first aid kit with the basics and a list of prescription medications for all family members and pets.
  • Be mindful of the time of the year, and have an adequate heat source if it's winter or a way to keep cool if it's summer.
  • Keep emergency cash available.
  • Have at least two weeks of non-perishable food items stored in a cool and dry location.
  • Keep one gallon of water, per person, per day for all family members, and remember extra water for your pets.
  • Don't just keep batteries and flashlights on hand; remember kerosene lamps and smaller LED lights.
  • Keep antibacterial cleansing wipes and hand wipes on hand to keep things as sanitary as possible.
  • Have phone chargers for your car so you can charge phones.
  • Have a basic battery-operated radio to hear emergency broadcasts.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed to keep foods and medications cold for as long as possible.

A quick side note about medications:  there are medications that require refrigeration. If you're experiencing a widespread power outage, a full refrigerator will hold its temperature for about 48 hours and one that is half full:  for about half that time. If the power isn't back on within those time frames, go purchase a cooler and some ice to store medications. Place medications in double, zippered plastic bags to ensure they are usable when needed.

This also goes for refrigerated infant formulas and foods that are not going to be used within 24-48 hours. Keep them in separate plastic bags to avoid spillage and cross-contamination with medications. Putting in cold beverages can help keep the coolers colder longer. Frozen food will last 24-36 hours. Again, as those times approach, transfer these items to ice-filled coolers if you can or cook it up, and share it.

This is a time to look out for those around you too. Make sure if there are those who are elderly, or with a special need, you check up on them. They might not be prepared, or if they have a cognitive issue or are elderly, they might be agitated or confused. Help them locate basic supplies in their home, and reassure them that this is a temporary situation. If you find them in medical distress, call 9-1-1, and wait with them until help arrives.

Managing Children

The key is to remain calm. This is especially true if you have young children. Children can become nervous and worried if you are. Don't forget to put things to keep young kids occupied in your disaster kit. Keep simple card games, storybooks, and board games in a dry location with the rest of your power outage kit. It's also okay if you forget these things. Use your imagination. Help them build a fort in a main room. If it's daylight out and the power outage is not due to a dangerous situation, take them outside to play for as long you can. This will help younger kids with restlessness focus on something else.

CONCLUSION

So, the lights are out. This was something exciting when we were kids. As an adult, it can be stressful depending on how long the power outage lasts. It can be a minor inconvenience when it's just your home that's having the power outage. When the power outage is widespread, the situation can become worrisome. The concern about hot water, food spoiling or no internet or television increase. Again, the key is to remain calm.

Don't forget that you might have tasks to do after the power is restored. Reset clocks and any alarms that run on electricity. Go through your fridge and freezer. If the food feels warm or freezer items are cool/cold but soft, don't chance it; throw it out. Check your homeowners' insurance policy to see if losing food due to a power outage is covered.

Being prepared for a power outage is the same as preparing for a fire escape plan or what to do during a natural disaster. The key is all in the planning that needs to take place before a power outage becomes an issue. It's not a bad idea to include a power outage plan in your home disaster planning and reviewing it occasionally with your family. That way everyone will know where everything is to help your family stay safe and live through a power outage.

10 Emergency Water Storage Tips

Water is the backbone of life. Often taken for granted in the First World, even the slightest natural or man-made disaster could cut off a water supply to even those most civilized of regions. Therefore, it is imperative to have an emergency plan in place that includes some type of emergency water storage.

In this guide on emergency water storage, we are going to explore all you need to know in order to be properly hydrated in case disaster were to strike. It may be a tough scenario to fathom, but there could be a situation where access to water may be unavailable for a period time. But, what disasters or scenarios could extinguish or contaminate the water supply? Let's find out more.

What Is the Best Way to Store Water?

Experts recommend the purchase of food-grade water storage containers for your emergency water storage needs. There are pricier home kits than can hold up to 55 gallons of water. But for those on a budget or those with a small house or apartment, there are other methods of maintaining emergency water storage. Buying extra bottled water at the supermarket is one way to be prepared. For example a 35-pack of bottled water adds up to a total of 4.6 gallons of water. That is enough water to sustain one person for four days. A cheaper option is to store faucet water in empty containers or jugs.

Back-Up Water Solutions

In addition to having a tangible emergency water supply, it's important to have ways to purify water in case it needs to be gathered from nearby water sources such rivers, lakes and streams. Drinking untreated water directly from these sources can be a dangerous proposition. Here are three ways to purify unsafe water:

  • Water filters
  • Purification tablets
  • Fuel and stove to boil water

Is There a Need for Emergency Water Storage?

You may think it could never happen to you, but natural disasters occur on a regular basis across the globe. In the United States alone, there are regularly tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms and earthquakes. Natural disasters such as these can knock out the water supply for days or even weeks. In the event of a city water supply contamination, water could become toxic and harmful to drink. Broken or burst pipes can cut off access to water from your home. If you combine all these factors, it should become clear that having some sort of emergency water storage can apply to any household in the world.

How Much Water?

The Center for Disease Control, or the CDC, recommends that each person has at least three gallons of emergency water storage. This is enough for each person to consume one gallon of water for a period of three days. Keep in mind that this is just the recommendation for hydration. When you factor in brushing your teeth, flushing the toilet, washing your hands, laundry and cooking, it becomes comes clear that you will need over three gallons for each member of the family.

Experts recommend storing at least 14 gallons of water per each person. This gives you a bare minimum two-week storage or a robust one-week emergency water storage. Also, don't forget to factor in water for your pets.

Emergency Water Storage Tips: Everything You Need to Know

Stored Water May Taste Funny

Water that has been in storage for a while may taste flat or "funny". This is not due to contamination, but rather the result of a lack of oxygen in the storage containers. The water is still perfectly safe to drink. To get rid of the flat taste swirl the liquid in your cup a few times before drinking it. Swirling the water allows it to gather more oxygen, which in turn enhances the taste.

Keep Water Storage on Pallets

If you are storing your water in 55-gallon storage barrels, you will most likely run into recommendations on the Internet which advise you to keep the barrels on wooden pallets instead of directly on the cement floor. The reasoning behind this is that the cement may contain toxic chemicals which may seep into the plastic storage barrels. This toxic reaction could contaminate your emergency water storage. Scientifically, there is no real proof to back up this claim unless the cement floor were to get really hot. But people with 55-gallon barrels should go ahead on store them on wooden pallets just to be safe.

Do I Need to Use Chlorine?

If you are using tap water from your city to fill your emergency water storage, there is no need to treat this water with chlorine. The city has already done this for you. If you are obtaining your water from an untreated source, however, it should be treated with the proper amount of chlorine. Untreated water from lakes, rivers or streams could contain dangerous microbes that can lead to sickness or even death. The proper equation to treat the water is to add one-eighth teaspoon of chlorine per one gallon of water.

Another option is to purchase water-treatment drops. There will be instructions on the label on how to properly use the product.

How Often Do I Rotate?

It is recommended to switch out your water storage once per year. This fact isn't as open-and-shut as it may seem, however. Technically, water does not have an expiration date. If water is properly stored, it will never spoil. What spoils the water is what gets into it. Taking the proper precautions to properly store your water can keep contaminants like bacteria out of your water. If you are worried about contamination, however, go ahead and feel free to rotate your emergency water storage once per year.

Can I Use My Pool?

The simple answer is yes, you can. The average swimming pool contains about 20,000 gallons of potential emergency water storage. The chlorine treatment used in pools is actually not harmful to drink at all. The major downfall of using your pool for emergency water storage is time. In about a week's time, the pool's filter will have been out of commission long enough for the water to become stagnant and will allow microscopic toxic agents to grow. Also, the chlorine will eventually run out and you will not have any way to clean the water.

Just to be safe, pool water of any sort should always be boiled before consumption. If you have a saltwater pool, it is not recommended to drink from it. Too much salt in your system could lead to dehydration.

How to Use Your Water during an Emergency

If your water supply begins to run low, DO NOT ration the water. Drink the proper amounts and go look for more the next day. Minimize the amount of water consumed by staying cool and reducing activity. If your storage runs low, you can also find an additional 20-30 gallons of water in your hot water heater. Only drink from this water if public water is still safe.

You can also use the water from the toilet reservoir (not the bowl) as long as the water is properly treated with bleach. Canned vegetables and fruits can also provide water for hydration.

Other General Emergency Water Storage Tips

  • Do not use milk jugs or refrigerated jugs to store water in
  • If using a container that previously held another liquid, clean the container well before storing water in it
  • Clearly label your emergency water storage "for drinking only" vs "for cleaning only"
  • Keep all water stored away from gasoline, kerosene, pesticides and other toxic substances
  • If you want to be sure water is safe before drinking it, you can store a water test kit

Final Thoughts

Having enough water during an emergency is one of the most important things to consider when prepping an emergency plan. Water is vital to survival as humans cannot go for very long without it. There are a number of options available for storing water. Some are more expensive and elaborate than others. What is most important is to properly store the water you have. Contaminated water will end up doing more harm than good.

Even though millions of dollars have been invested in our country's infrastructure, a natural or man-made disaster can leave your water access limited very quickly. Some of these disasters occur with little to no advanced warning.

It's up to us to be properly prepared, and not rely on the authorities for help. In the event of a disaster, these emergency services will be busy dealing with the rest of the population that was not properly prepared. Having a solid emergency water storage system in place before an emergency gives you a major advantage over those who are hoping to be helped. The answers are out there. It is up to you to take the next steps. You may think it can never happen to you. And who knows, you may never need to use your emergency water storage. But, it's always better to be safe than sorry.
